An Eye MD is a medical doctor who specializes
in diagnosis, treatment, and surgery of the eye. In addition to medical
and surgical eye care, Eye MDs also fit glasses and contact lenses
for the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Only an Eye MD can provide total eye care.
Eye MDs are committed to providing the
highest quality of eye care to their patients.
Eye MDs undergo rigorous training in general medicine and surgery
of the eye. Their
training starts with four years of undergraduate training prior
to entering medical school. Medical school is an extremely intensive
and competitive four year training program where
all MDs are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of human disease.
After completion of medical school an entire year is spent as
an intern caring for patients with diverse medical problems in a
hospital setting.

After internship qualified applicants are accepted into ophthalmology
training programs. Ophthalmology training (residency) is a three
or four year program which focuses on the diagnosis and treatment
of eye disease. Intensive training is received on the diagnosis
and treatment of cataract, glaucoma, pediatric eye disease, inflammatory
eye disease, orbital disease, corneal and external disease, retinal
disease, ocular pathology, neuroophthalmic disease, ocular trauma,
oculoplastic surgery, refractive surgery, and the diagnosis of systemic
disease in the eye.
Eye MDs are trained in microsurgery and master
the intricate techniques required to perform modern ophthalmic surgery.
Hundreds of surgical cases are performed by the resident throughout
his or her training program. In addition to incisional surgery,
Eye MDs gain extensive training in the use of lasers to treat a
broad range of ocular diseases. After completion of residency training
Eye MDs may become board certified in Ophthalmology by the Amercian
board of Ophthalmology. No eye care professional is better qualified
to provide total eye care than the Eye MD.
